2010 R.C. CARTWRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP CAMPAIGN

We wish to thank all ROCKS’ members and supporters for their donation to the RC Cartwright Foundation during 2009.  During 2009, more than $19,000.00 was raised to provide tuition assistance to ROTC cadets who are enrolled in programs to become military officers.  Due to the generosity of our members, we were able to award ten tuition assistance scholarships at the Annual Spring Gala, this past April.

Our monetary goal for 2010 is $25,000.  Therefore, as you plan your tax exempt donations for 2010, please consider donating to the R.C. Cartwright Scholarship Foundation.  One hundred percent (100%) of your donation goes to the Foundation for scholarships.  We will acknowledge your donation in the ROCKET (name only).

Thanks in advance for your consideration and support.  The ROCKS point of contact is COL (Ret) Lucretia M. McClenney – Email: lmmcclenney@aol.com / Phone: (703) 924-1579.

VA on wheels!

The VA is reaching out in a new way by bringing service to Veterans and their families where they live with 50 new Mobile VA Vet Centers (MVCs). The MVCs are customized RV offices equipped to provide emergency support if needed. MVC services include PTSD and military sexual trauma counseling, bereavement counseling, marriage and family counseling, VA benefits information, and suicide prevention referrals. They travel to rural and other under-served areas to save travel time and money for Veterans and their families. Many Vet Center staff members are combat Veterans who relate directly to the Veterans they see. Jesse Davis, a Veteran and Mobile Vet Center driver, states, “The more Veterans I’m around, the more my confidence goes up. And the more my confidence goes up, the more I can help others with information. That’s important for me and I love my job because of it.” Typical of MVC use was last week’s visit to the PX at Fort Benning, Ga. The mobility of these traveling counseling centers provides convenience, visibility and awareness to the services offered by the VA, and, ultimately, aid for those in transition between military and civilian life. Learn more about MVCs at http://www.vetcenter.va.gov/.

Wereth 11 Massacare Documentary

Currently in production, The Wereth Massacre, retraces the steps eleven black GI’s from the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion took when their unit was overrun by Germans at the start of the Battle of the Bulge.  Their 10-mile trek from their battery position to Wereth, Belgium would be the last journey of their lives as a local resident turned them in to an SS scouting party.

Subsequently all eleven were butchered and killed.

The film begins with a recreation of the German artillery barrage and the attack on the 333rd then immediately brings us up to modern day where descendents of members of the 333rd retrace the journey of the “Wereth 11”. Some of the relatives had never been to Belgium nor seen the place where their uncles and fathers fought. The emotions are quite compelling.

The film closes with a wreath laying at the memorial and emotional remembrance of the eleven men who were murdered so senselessly in a war crime that is all but unknown to most Americans today. The film will be released in February, 2011 for Black History Month.

PRESS Release
2010 Wreath 11 Brochure

The European Chapter of The ROCKS Launches Ambitious Fundraiser to Permanently Honor Black WWII Soldiers Killed in Wereth, Belgium.

The European Chapter of The ROCKS, Inc, is working to have a memorial recognized as part of the American Battle Monument Commission. The site honors the 11 black GIs of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion who were murdered by the German SS after they had surrendered during the first days of the Battle of the Bulge. This memorial also honors all black GIs and segregated units that fought in Europe during WW II. It is believed to be the only memorial of its type in Europe.

Creation of the site began in 2001 when three Belgians took on the task of creating a more prominent memorial to the soldiers. The nonprofit U. S. Wereth Memorial was created to acquire the land where the massacre took place by integrating the cross erected in 1994 by Herman Langer into a new memorial, which was dedicated by General William "Kip" Ward on 23 May 2004.  http://www.wereth.org/_en/en_dedication.php.

In May 2009, General Ward hosted a ROCKS meeting where he challenged the Europe Chapter to take on the task of the Wereth 11 Memorial Site being recognized as part of the American Battle Monument Commission. This has finally come to fruition; however, one of the requirements for its being accepted into the Monument Trust Fund Program is an acceptable plan and transfer of sufficient funds to the Commission to fund the maintenance of the site for at least 30 years. That amount is estimated at $85,000.

The Europe Chapter of the ROCKS, Inc. believes this can be done with the support of other Rocks. We would like to start a Wereth 11 Pledge program. The Kick-Off for this event starts 3 April and ends 30 September 2010.

The proceeds to the Europe Chapter on behalf of Wereth 11 will be placed in a trust to recognize and honor these 11 African Americans and their courage during World War II including maintaining the site.  All donations to the European Chapter of the ROCKS, Inc, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization are tax deductible within the limits of the law.

Please make your check or money order payable to "The ROCKS": European Chapter and mail to CMR 442 Box 356, APO AE 09042. A ROCKS European Chapter Paypal account is also available. Check the Rocks website for more info or contact MAJ LAWANDA D WARTHEN, Ph.D, Rocks European chapter, lawanda.d.warthen@us.army.mil. Stateside number:(561) 459-3312).

They eagerly look forward to your contributions and support, to achieve their pledge goals that will result in honoring these men who made the ultimate sacrifice.
